The term toxic stress refers to a wide array of biological changes that occur at the molecular, cellular, and behavioral levels when there is prolonged or significant adversity in the absence of mitigating social-emotional buffers.2 Whether those adversity-induced changes are considered adaptive and health-promoting or maladaptive and toxic depends on the context.
